The Ten Commandments for Today’s Society

I  I the Lord am thy God…you shall have no other gods before me.

Some people have become involved in the collecting of various items and have grown to love their collections. Is this interest and activity violating the First Commandment?

Some people think that they are always right and can do no wrong. Is this mindset in violation of the First Commandment?

II   Thou shall not make unto thee any image of idolatry, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the Earth beneath, or that is in the water under the Earth.

Are photographs, which are an exact rendition of earthly objects in violation of Commandment II?

Are gross distortions of reality violating this Commandment?

Is a strong reliance on a person, for example a physician, to help or solve problems, in violation of this Commandment?

III    Thou shall not take the name of the Lord Your God in vain.

Is referring to God in a casual way in violation of Commandment III?

Is using God as an intermediary in an oath in violation of this Commandment?

Is using God as an intermediary in a curse in violation of Commandment III?

IV    Remember to holy the Sabbath Day.

What day has God designated as the Sabbath Day?

How is to “keep holy” defined?

Is shopping permitted on the Sabbath Day?

Is arguing or fighting permitted on the Sabbath Day?

V     Honor your father and mother.

What are the components to honoring your father and mother?

Does honoring your father and mother include grandfathers and grandmothers?

Are guardians to children to be honored like a father and mother?

VI    Thou shall not kill.

Is mercy killing in violation of this Commandment?
